Summary: Hand written surrender note by John Thomas Holliman describing his 1865 experiences deserting to the Union Army in Petersburg, VA in Feb. Later sent to Indiana to work on a farm and walked home to Alabama in September 1865. He never received either a Confederate or Union pension. Died in poverty, age 86. Great grandfather of Glenn N. Holliman.
